FLORIDA STATE HEAD COACH TO RETIRE AFTER THIRTY-FOUR YEARS
Bobby Bowden announced Tuesday that he would retire as head football coach at Florida State after a 34-year tenure in which he transformed a college football outpost into a perennial national power. Bowden, 80, met with his team Tuesday afternoon before making official what most knew was inevitable over the past few days: that it was time for him to move aside for Jimbo Fisher, the head coach in waiting. Bowden will coach the Seminoles (6-6) in their bowl game, then step down. He will retire as the second winningest coach in major-college football behind Penn State’s Joe Paterno. Bowden has won 388 games to Paterno’s 393.
