FRANCE ADVANCES TO WORLD CUP
Celebrations rang out around France on Wednesday as the French national team and the team from Algeria, which used to exist under French rule, qualified for next year’s World Cup in dramatic fashion. At the Stade de France, the French national team scored a disputed goal deep into extra time to tie the match with Ireland but win the teams’ two-game playoff, 2-1. In Khartoum, Sudan, Algeria beat Egypt, 1-0, in a one-game playoff to reach its first World Cup since 1986.
