EITHER WINS ONE IN LA &
SLUMPING DODGERS GET LIFT
The 11th career walk-off hit for Andre Ethier was a ninth-inning grand slam to center field on a one-out, 2-2 pitch from Brewers reliever LaTroy Hawkins Thursday night in a 7-3 Dodgers win. The Dodgers (12-16) snapped a two-game losing streak. It was the first Dodgers walk-off grand slam since Russell Martin's in April 2007. Jamey Carroll singled leading off the inning, and Xavier Paul followed with the same one out later. Matt Kemp worked a full-count walk to load the bases. Closer Jonathan Broxton, pitching for the first time in six days, spoiled rookie starter John Ely's first potential win in the top of the ninth. The Dodgers led, 3-1, and Broxton had two outs when Gregg Zaun and pinch-hitter Craig Counsell had RBI hits. Counsell hit a slow grounder up the middle that shortstop Carroll dived for and knocked away, allowing Prince Fielder to score the tying run from second as Carroll searched for the ball. Broxton allowed four hits, struck out two and is 1-for-3 in save situations this season. In his second career start, Ely went 6 2/3 innings, allowed four hits, one run, no walks and struck out seven. He retired 16 Brewers in a row from the second to the seventh, but by Friday could be on his way back to Triple-A. Dodgers manager Joe Torre said this week that Ely is a candidate to be sent down when reliever Jeff Weaver returns from the disabled list. Ely garnered enough confidence that Torre let him hit with runners on the corners and one out in the bottom of the sixth inning with the Dodgers ahead 3-0. A bloop RBI single into right field drove him Ely of the game with two outs in the top of the seventh. Ely threw 108 pitches, 72 for strikes. The Dodgers took a 1-0 lead in the first inning against Brewers starter Dave Bush on a James Loney sac fly to center. An error by Fielder and a Paul double put the Dodgers ahead, 3-0, in the second inning. (MLB.com)
